Looking For a Happy Ending - Masterpost

Super nervous about posting this one.

WARNINGS: This is based on several highly-publicized real-life stories about childhood abduction victims like Natascha Kampusch, Shawn Hornbeck, Elizabeth Smart, etc. In particular it is largely inspired by a boy named Steve Stayner. It may just be me, but the idea of a story based on the media circuses that trivialize what these kids went through makes me a little queasy. I almost didn't write this because of it, but in the end I went through with it because the more I thought about those media circuses the angrier I got at how disrespectful and irresponsibly obtuse they are about how these kids are coerced into staying with their captors. I debated writing original fiction about this, but in the end I went with fanfic, mainly because the other way felt too much like I was trying to compose a novelization of these kids which feld ickier (totally legitimate word) to me in a way I can't even explain.

tl;dr? Here are a list of the triggers you will find in this fic:

- Child abduction
- Non-con
- Sexual/Physical/Emotional/Child abuse
- Prostitution/Sexual exploitation of a minor
- ...Incest adjacent?
- Drug/Alcohol abuse
- Some language
- Violence
- Suicidal behaviour
- Internalized homophobia
- Bullying
- Inspired by real events

Eventually I hope this fic will have a sequel that will look at life after the child makes it back home, from the media shitheads, to the emotional recovery, etc. For now, this is the story of how one of these kids finds his way back home.

And the story:

This is seriously intense. It breaks my heart, but I love it. I love the vulnerable un-dapper Blaine. I get so excited whenever I see your updates! Any idea when you'll update next?

Thanks for the comment! I'm glad you're liking it so far. I'm not sure, but I hope to have an update posted by no later than mid-next week. Usually I try to post on the weekend and would still like to have it done by that point if I can, but I'm coming to the end now and there's still a lot of story left, so we'll have to see.

I'm pretty sure someone is plagiarizing your story on fanfiction.net under the screen name xNeonxLightning ...unless you are also this person but somehow I don't think so because her profile there states she is 14 and in the US and here you state you are from Calgary. What really set me off was the first chapter has been posted with a note "This just popped into my head. Let me know if I should continue this," which just didn't sound like you and of course, I knew this story was completed already. Unless it is you creating another persona or something but it all seems really off to me so I thought I'd let you know.

Thank you so much for letting me know. I've just posted something on the site and I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to get it taken down. I've never been plagerised before so I'm not exactly sure how to go about handling this haha.

I just thought you'd like to know-if you don't already-that it appears the plagarised version of your fiction has been deleted, as has the account of the person who stole your work. I'm personally overjoyed by this-no one deserved to have their hard work stolen-and can't wait for the sequal. :)

Thanks for letting me know! I had been aware that it got taken down, but I'm glad people have been so helpful about the whole thing.

The sequel is on its way! :)

I really love this story and I'm sorry for the shit you're going through on FF.net. Hopefully, the person who plagiarized your story will get what is coming to her. I look forward to more brilliant work in the future.

Thank you for the comment (and all your help with FF.net!). I'm glad you liked the story.

It looks like the story's been taken off the site and the user has gone underground.

It really means a lot that you all did so much to help me. I kind of love this fandom right now :D

I have read this story a while ago and I can't believe I forgot to comment on it! So, I just wanted to say, I really love the story, it's one of my favourites. ^^

I saw your post on tumblr about how it was stolen, so I came here and read the whole thing in about an hour. It's so good! I really hope the other person gets in trouble for stealing it, because you deserve all the credit. I hope you can get the sequel up soon!

Thank you for commenting! I'm really glad you liked it! It looks like the plagiarized story was removed so that's good.

And the sequel will be up, well soon-ish at any rate. Haha, I've got a ways to go on it, but I think I must be pretty close to the first part going up soon, anyhow.

Looking For A Happy Ending
This whole fic is amazing!!! I want to read it again! And I can't wait for the sequel. That is still happening? Right?

Re: Looking For A Happy Ending
Thank you so much! And yes, the sequel is still happening. Hopefully I'll have the first part up soon, although it probably will be going up a lot slower than this first story, since I'll be writing it and finishing university at the same time.

I remember this fic, it was completely awesome!!

Wait what on earth was happening? I saw some posts that some plagiarism was happening but I didn't know it was this fic :(

Thanks for commenting! I'm glad you liked it, and yes there will be a sequel starting to be posted soon :)

A couple days ago someone started plagiarizing the story on FF.net. They said it was theirs and copy/pasted the entire first section of Part One. From what I could tell they had already written a massive RPF fic that was hugely well received and seemed to be all their own, so for the life of me I don't know why they stole this story and threw all of that away, but they did. I asked for help reporting the theft to FF.net and someone posted the notice on their tumblr for me and it got an huge response. So many people got together and helped me take care of it so quickly. It was incredible. I'm kind of fangirling over the fandom now, they were absolutely fantastic. Made my year :)

Wow. Very strong story. Brave of you to write it. But you did the sensitive subject matter justice. You mention a sequel potential. That would be lovely. You did conclude this tale so it's not that. It's just you created a lovely characterization in Blaine and now I'd love to read more.

Thank you so much! I'm really glad that you liked it! :)

And yes, I have been writing a sequel. I'm actually in the middle of cleaning up the second-to-last chapter before I send it off to my betas :)

If you want to read what I have posted so far, the masterpost is here.

Thanks. I'll wait till you are all done. My memory isn't good enough to read WIPs. I lose too much in between updates and don't feel like I'm really capturing an author's flow. But I'll save the link and check back.

Hi, I would like to read this but am worried about triggers. I can see you've warned for non-con but could you tell me whether there are graphic rape/sexual assault scenes in the story?
Feb. 1st, 2012 03:00 am (UTC)
Wow, thank you so much for asking. I get so worried about triggering people with this fic.

Keeping in mind that there are also references to what is happening to Blaine throughout the story, I would say there are about 4 assault/rape scenes, none of them very graphic. Mostly they're just a single sentence, maybe two, describing one very specific, almost tunnel-vision detail (if that makes any sense). In one case, it isn't even described that much.

BUT, and please, please don't skip over this part, there are a couple aftermath scenes that are extremely intense. Most of them involve the sexual assault/rape of minors, and one of them legitimately made me feel ill when I wrote it - I had to write it several times to make it less descriptive. It's a small child's perspective, which I've tried to write from their emotional level, and it's extremely unpleasant. A lot of people have told me it was a very hard scene to get through.

If you want to try it you can - it starts out with one of the more disturbing scenes (although not the disturbing scene), so you can see if you think you'll be able to handle it early on. But again, don't read it if you don't think you'll be okay. I held back a long time on posting it, and one of the reasons was I'm honestly worried about people getting into it without being prepared for how brutal the concepts are (which is mainly why this story has it's rating, because I never would have posted something like this if the actual non-con was graphic).

Hope this helps with your decision and thank you again for asking!

Thank you so much for getting back to me, I really appreciate it (and I especially am glad you mentioned that one of the scenes is from a child's point of view so thank you for that). I'm going to give it a miss for the moment but I'd really like to read the sequel about recovery so I'm looking forward to giving that a go in a few days! Thanks :)

I have to say, this story honestly *terrified* me. Which is to say, it's excellently written. You did an amazing job. I've never been so scared for a character in my life. Geeze. Congrats; it's a great story. I'm gonna go read the sequel now (and hope it's a little bit lighter...)
Feb. 2nd, 2012 04:10 am (UTC)
Thanks so much for the comment! I'm really flattered :)

And yes, the sequel is... a little lighter haha. It kind of depends which part you're reading. Blaine definitely is working through what happened in it, which means that sometimes it's still a little grim, but it's of the h/c variety :)

Amazing fanfic! I love angst and pain in ( weirdo) and this one was so full of them. My heart ached while reading this. It brilliant and horrible in all the best ways :)

Thank you very much! I'm really glad you liked it and, yeah, apparently angst fic is what I do, which is news to me. I always thought crack fic would end up being my thing haha.

This blew me away. I read this and the sequel in three days (I'm on summer break), and I seriously could not stop. I love how you handled the dialogue because it felt so real. I could tell you put a lot of effort into writing, and it really paid off. It was more heart-wrenching than a lot of actual books I've read, and I'm so impressed.
